Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889, in a suburb of London. His mother, Lily Harley, was an actress in a comedy. His father, also an artist of music hall, left the family when Charles was still small. A serious problem of laryngitis ended the career of the young Lily Harley, forcing Charles Chaplin artistic debut with only five years old.
Charles Chaplin died on Christmas Day (December 25), 1977 in Vevey, Switzerland and was buried in Cemetery Corsier-Sur-Vevey in Corsier-Sur-Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland. Then months later, on March 3, 1978, his body was stolen in an attempt to extort money from his family. The plan failed, and the thieves were captured and the body recovered eleven weeks later near Lake Geneva. There is a famous statue of Chaplin in Vevey.
